Okay, for the first time since I've started using PC's (15+ years), over this past weekend was the first time one of my systems got infected by a virus/spyware/malware application. Technically, it wasn't my fault, something was either downloaded by another user or something was clicked on a hijacked webpage. Even with being behind a NAT Router, my firewall running and McAfee Suite installed, my system got completely hijacked. The spyware application is called Antivirus Pro 2009 and it's a pain in the butt to remove. It basically installs as a fake anti-virus application and hijacks Windows security alerts, Internet Explorer, and redirects DNS. After trying to manually remove the application on my own through Program Files, WINDOWS, Registry, etc... My DNS was still being redirected. My last resort was to search online and try some other manual attempts as suggested.

http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/antivirus2009-antivirus-2009-removal-instructions

But still the damn application was lingering somewhere in my system. When all else false, format. Obviously, there should be an easier way to get rid of the application, but rather taking the risk of installing a third party removal tool which may affect your system even more - it's some times better to take the loss and format just to ensure your system gets a good scrubbing.

Be on the look out and ensure to update your security apps (anti-virus, spyware, malware defenders, etc...) and make sure nobody on your network is downloading sketchy files, clicking unknown links, visiting bogus websites (which brings me back to a good email from my colleague D. Newkirk (see below) - Why there's no such thing as a "trusted website"), etc...

D. Newkirk wrote:
Every web-browser-centric security advisory issued by Microsoft includes boilerplate about safe browsing, including advice to "visit only trusted sites." The problem is, as you may have heard me say if you've been in the New York office, there's no such thing--or, to put it better, there's no site you can trust or should trust.

I say this because of the reality that because many, if not most, big-time modern websites are database-driven in whole or in part--that is, that they include dynamic content that is automatically added to the page code your browser downloads through interaction with a database--and that many, many of those large sites tend to be managed, it's often all too easy for The Bad Guys to inject malicious content, usually very small scripts that direct your browser to download malicious programs, into site SQL databases, and therefore into the content of the pages your browser automatically loads, displays, and executes. Just Google "SQL injection attack" and you'll start getting the scary picture.

How big-time and ostensibly trustworthy does a compromised site need to be to prove the trusted-site concept worthless? How about Sony's PlayStation site, which was recently compromised by exactly such a SQL injection attack? You can read all about it in "Sony PlayStation’s site SQL injected, redirecting to rogue security software," available at

http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1394 .

Want to use your computer for online banking or shopping? The safest advice is: Don't. If you must, my advice is to do it using an operating system not yet so attack-prone as Windows--Mac OS or Linux, protected by a firewall and running an antivirus/antimalware program, and using Firefox, equipped with the NoScript add-on, as your browser. Or you can do as most of us do: Gamble with your banking, personal, and financial information--that is, with your identity.

Won't antivirus/antimalware software keep you safe? Sure, (a) if your AV vendor is rally alert and agile, and (b) if your AV vendor happens to know about the Bad Stuff your browser just downloaded. The (b) part is the rub--where the popular AV-protection paradigm breaks down: Because nowadays The Bad Guys aren't trying crash your system or reformat 100,000 hard drives or shout ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US in your face. Like really crafty, successful thieves, they want to gain access undetected, start stealing undetected, and keep stealing undetected, across relatively limited computer populations. Job Zero for them is to own and keep updated all the AV software you might own and write their malicious code to slip by them all for as long as possible. *It's their 9-to-5 job* to do this. To illustrate this, I'll end with another story from the Internet Storm Center--one that discusses why those traveling for business in general or to the Summer Olympics in particular should leave their electronic devices at home and/or turned off: http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=4588&rss .

"I am particularly concerned," writes one commenter to ISC, "with the custom trojan infections coming back through flash-based medias from traveling parties, whether through their personal computers cross-contaminating professional assets, or on media that they bring into the workplace. These trojan variants typically evade AV for up to three months, are very slow to spread, and present deep, slow infiltration into the machine whose backchannels can lead to data loss and lateral control of other machines."

4 day weekend with kimberly in south beach... overall, the trip was dope specifically because i was with kimberly and because the weather was perfect... i haven't been down to south beach since '99 or 2000, some where around there... you gotta love it though, people driving around the block 4/5 times... you think they are looking for a parking spot, but no - they just want to floss... getting into the "hot spots" is like getting picked in gym class when you were in elementary school... very selective, but since i was with kimberly there were no issues.. the wait was just a couple of minutes... the mansion is an interesting spot, taking that the dope beats were played in the lobby... can't wait to go back... ;)ryan bandoy original won originalwon
